My 5th Oil Painting – Intensity, A Self-Portrait (2007)

Click at your own risk!

I have a mixed feeling on this self-portrait oil painting and it is edging towards the borderline of disaster (click on thumbnail to view a larger image at your own risk). Perhaps I am not used to looking at my own image, having this somewhat intense guy who somewhat looks like me with a face larger than me staring back at me … it is sort of scary. When Cynthia returned from work and discovered my new oil painting, she couldn’t stop laughing. I reckon she knows my face better than I do (duh!) and she kept on asking how come this and how come that. I have to drag her into the bathroom and post “that look” to her. To demonstrate how I got “that look”, I positioned my shoulders 45 degrees relative to the mirror, I turned my head at a 30 degrees relative to my shoulders while my eyes looked straight ahead. Still, the questions of “how come” did not subside.

While the result could be disastrous, it was my intend to create a pair of eyes that captivate attention, lips that are redder than normal for contrast, and an overall texture of ruggedness. For that, I think I have achieved what I wanted. Hopefully my next self-portrait will be better.

To paint this self-portrait image, I have to turn my tiny bathroom into a painting studio because that is the only place in my home that has a huge mirror with 3 spot lights over my head. The easel was mounted right on top of the closed toilet bowl with a jar of turpentine to wash my brushes resting on top of the bowl’s lid. The paint tubes were lined up carefully along the side of the bathtub. The smell of the oils can be overwhelming at times because there was hardly any air circulation inside.

An excerpt of our conversation after Cynthia saw the painting.

Me: So, what do you think of this self-portrait?
Cyn: Erm …
Me: (looking at Cyn with anticipation)
Cyn: Well, the painting looks intense.
Me: Shall we frame this one then?
Cyn: Hmmm … how come you are not smiling?
Me: I can’t.
Cyn: You can’t?
Me: No, I can’t keep smiling for 3 hours. Besides it looks insane to smile at the mirror while painting.
Cyn: Hmmm … perhaps we can hang it somewhere that we don’t get to see first thing in the morning?
Me: …

Looking back, I don’t think I want to hang this painting in the bedroom either. Last night before I retired to bedroom, I dimmed the light, looking at that pair of eyes staring at me sort of freaked me out.

My Scorecard Results for Feb 2007

Time passes me by and without realizing it, it is the month of March. A good portion of this rather short month I was holidaying with Cynthia in Melbourne. Barely made it for the home cooked meals measurement, I yet again have failed the exercise index with a downward trend. If only I can find a way to quantify all the walking and hiking in Melbourne, I could have made it. I guess the take home message for me is to emphasis on training this March. Besides, my friends and I am heading to Mount Kinabalu at the end of the month.

Looking ahead, I am most likely to fail two of the three quarterly measurements. Oh well, I have a month to think about it.

Paris Je T’aime – A Movie Unlike Anything You Have Seen

Paris does has her magic. When I was studying in UK, I spent most of my school holiday in Paris with my Aunt and Uncle who worked there. I used to know the city inside out, where the historical sites were, and where the best ice-cream store was. Indeed while I was in Paris years later under a work attachment, the city has inspired me to write. Most of my older articles were written in Paris. Of which, my favourite articles are One Late Afternoon (At McDonald’s), Love Fiction, and One Simple Day. And I have written a number of poems as well. One of which (Death Marriage) has over one thousand hits making it the most popular article in this website.

Back to the movie “Paris, Je T’aime”, it is a collection of 18 short stories packed with International movie stars. I picked “Paris, Je T’aime” because I thought Natalie Portman is the main actress. However, she is one of the 46 actors in the movie excluding the extras. Directed by 22 directors and written by 25 script writers with one common theme – love, “Paris, Je T’aime” presents love in different aspects filled with twists that keep audience entertained throughout. My favourite story is definitely Natalie Portman’s “Faubourg Saint-Denis” (the rest of my Movie Review Squad has their own favourites).

Perhaps Paris holds a special place in my heart and perhaps I do enjoy reading short stories grouped under a common theme, “Paris Je T’aime” is by far the most original work I have seen so far. I have included a trailer below. Hope you’ll enjoy watching it.

Edit: I watched the trailer again and realised that I have missed out 2 of them. Hence, the total number of short stories is 18 instead.

My 150th Song – Currency Of Time

The last song I composed was back in December 2006. Guess I have been busy with the exercise rituals, new hobby of oil painting, practicing for an open mic performance, and to tour Australia. All these while I ponder at the back of my head where has my songwriting creativity juice gone to. This morning, I planned to have a jog, do some oil painting, and head to town for movie. However, this melody somehow stuck in my head during shower and wouldn’t go away. And I have this theme of “time” I wished to write about. I set up my home recording studio and the chords just flew naturally. Thinking I was up for an easy ride but I could not go beyond the first line for hours. I was so tempted to down a bottle of beer to get my creativity juice going (it helps to relax at times). Perseverance wins I guess.

Some of you may wonder why I do not broadcast the actual song demo instead of posting the lyrics. My emphasis in songwriting is always on lyrics and to me, the raw form of the song – lyrics – is like grapes. Grapes take time and effort to mature and blend into bottles of wine – the actual mix down of various tracks of music instruments and vocals. And what I wish is share is either the grapes or the bottles of wine and nothing in between. That’s why. Besides, there are copyright issues that require me to publicly broadcast the song in person before I can attempt to claim the rights to them. Tedious.

“Currency Of Time” is the 150th song I have written. That reminds me to go out for a celebration tonight and all expenses paid by my Movie Review Squad.

Currency Of Time

Sometimes when we try too hard to live ahead of time
Things that so eager to try
And now these steps we take, running out of breath
How we wish to stop … and travel back in time

The singularity of time
This metal with a ticking sound
A rhythm never ceases
This pulse we feel inside

And all these years we have traded
And all these sands of time
The fate we caressed
These choices we have made

The currency of time
Something we all lost count
Into the river we pour, flowing slowly to the sea
From the river of serenity
To the raging mouth of the ocean
The currency of time far beyond our reach

All that is lost
Look what we’ve got
These sands sipping through our hands

The currency of time, the question deep inside
When we close our eyes, caused this fountain to subside
Stop … listen to our hearts, hear this sound of time
Does it sound like coins falling onto the ground?

Melbourne – What A Great Tour Destination (Our Itinerary)

Click on thumbnail to see an enlarged image

A short summary of a holiday of enormous rocks by the shore, national parks where koalas and kangaroos outnumber human beings, beautiful skyline of Melbourne city, a town recreated to model the 18th century, lots and lots of romantic beaches, a lovely 3rd honeymoon to be with that someone special 24×7 freed from any distractions, and more. I will post more pictures as time goes by.

Returned from Australia with sands on my shoes, a good tan on my skin, an additional of 3kg on top of the 2kg I have gained since last Christmas, over 500 digital pictures, in excess of 2 hours worth of video, and of course, all the lovely memories that will take weeks to pen down. Rather than posting the one final article that may seem dated after sorting out all the pictures and thoughts, it may be a better idea to publish bite-sized articles each under a cohesive theme. The above is one of the 3 stitched pictures I have taken (a combination of 4 pictures taken in horizontal order) showcasing the absolute charm of the Great Ocean Road; rock stacks that are formed by the waves and wind coming all the way from the Antarctica; a breathtaking scenery that reminds us how tiny we all are compare to the size and the timescale of those monumental work of nature. You do not need to look close to the stitched picture to observe that the Earth is indeed … round. Amazing, isn’t it? (Click on thumbnail above to see a larger image).

Contrary to what Cynthia thinks, I am not much of a travel planner. Having a fixed itinerary diminishes the level of adventure. Besides, there are lots of uncontrollable variables such as weather, how much we will love the place, new discoveries, and so on. Cynthia has a lunch appointment in Melbourne on Day 3 so the initial plan was to have a 2 1/2 days city tour. After one day walking under a 38 degrees hot sun, I think we have covered most of Melbourne’s tourist spots in the city itself. We even experienced the sunset at the Central Business District by the river.

Visiting the Tourist Information center on Day 1 has inspired me to rent a car immediately on Day 2 and head off to Phillip Island down south of Melbourne (number 8 on the map above). My action has somewhat shocked Cynthia and with a car, she was not complaining at all. After a day of walking in a hot, hot weather, she welcomed the comfort of a car with a capital W. Phillip Island is a lovely place to experience Australian wildlife (such as koalas and penguins) in its natural habitat. I did not know that there are penguins living in Australia and we were shivering in a cold drizzle just to watch the penguins making their ways to the hills of Phillip Island at dusk.

After Cynthia’s lunch appointment on Day 3, I have suggested to hit the Great Ocean Road (number 7 on the map) as it is supposed to be the highlight of the entire tour. I had no idea how many days we would spend in Great Ocean Road. As we were approaching Apollo Bay, I spotted a sign saying “Bed & Breakfast – A Room with a View”. I drove up the hill and checked ourselves into a room with one of the most spectacular views I have seen so far. The sound of the ocean and view of the shore from the hill was just charming.

Continued the Great Ocean Road drive, we went as far as Peterborough on Day 4 and found another B&B – a house that can easily be one of the most beautiful Western home I have seen. On the night of arrival, the owner – an Australian musician who has won a golden album award back in the 70s – was jamming with his band inside the garage. What more could I ask for?

Day 5, we finished off all the major scenic lookout, passed the capital of Great Ocean Road – Warrnambool (somewhere near Portland in the map) – and I have decided to visit a National Park for a change. Up north and into Grampians we went (number 6).

I have always wanted to visit a National Park and did not have a chance to. Now I have. We have seen herds of kangaroos jumping across a small crater and what intrigued me most is that we were most probably the only pair of human beings in a 10 km radius. The Australians must have been camping deep inside the park or we have chosen an odd timing to visit the park.

The motel we stay at Halls Gap (still at number 6 in the map) is probably one of the best motels we have stayed – spacious with a somewhat artistic layout. Day 6 and Cynthia wanted to visit the town Ballarat. Hence we drove towards the direction of Melbourne and visited one of the Melbourne’s top tourist attractions – Sovereign Hill, a typical gold mining settlement has been re-created. We had no idea how heavy gold bars are and what miners have to go through in finding gold.

Continued the journey to the east we have reached Yarra Valley and stayed at Healsville (number 10 in the map). Day 7 and we have visited the Healesville Sanctuary – a temporary home for many Australian wildlife. We have visited some of the famous wineries in the region as well.

With one more day to go – though we were both tired – I proposed to head down south and visit the Mornington Peninsula (number 2) in the morning and relax ourselves at the St. Kilda Beach in the afternoon. Cynthia gamed for it. Lovely. The town Sorrento at Mornington Peninsula is truly beautiful – the beach, the boats, and the seagulls. And St. Kilda Beach? Wait till you see the photos I post later on.

If you have not visited Melbourne, I strongly recommend you to do so. You won’t regret it. More blogs and pictures to come.

Wishing You All A Prosperous Chinese New Year

As you are reading this, I am either on the way to or have already landed on a foreign continent that I have not set my feet on before this year, a land once ruled by animals with bags in front of their bodies, and I wish to give those bears that sleep close to 20 hours a day some good hugs hoping to rub some of their anti-insomnia magic onto me. Australia that is.

To thank you all for the support to me and my website, I have decided to do something I have not done before and publish 10 blogs in one go before I fly off. These 10 blogs cover a range of topics including the progress of my band that I seldom write about these days, my new oil painting, another YouTube contribution on one hilarious clip I came across when I played the new episode of Sam & Max, a sizzling hot video of a lingerie fashion show, music review on the American Idol runner-up Katherine McPhee, the young and talented BoA with success that you may not have heard before, and more. Hope you enjoy reading them as much as I am writing them.

WilfridWong.com and its crews wish all our readers a prosperous Chinese New Year and a Happy Holiday!

My 4th Oil Painting – My White Pepper (2007)

Click here to enlarge the image

I was thinking to myself, before I can paint human beings, I better start practicing on teddy bears. After all, it is a lot easier to ask a teddy bear to stay still for 4 hours than a human being. Knowing the peppers that I deliberately bought as oil painting subjects were expiring soon, I have this ambitious composition of having a teddy bear next to a plate of peppers. As though it was not already a challenge, I placed a tiny candle light in front of the teddy bear. I have also chosen my living room for the more gentle background colour (all 3 rooms of my home have different tones). Satisfied with the composition (click here to view), I started with my sketching.

(Click here or the thumbnail to view a larger image.)

Not sure if I have deliberately taken my time painting this picture or the composition is kind of complex, it took me a long time to finish. By the time I was done with the painting, the candle light was out (about 3.5 to 4 hours). There was a lot of colour switching from the 3 primary colours to the different shades of white. The candle light took me a long time to model as I took time to observe what effects it has on the surroundings. First it was the reflection of the orange light on the glass holder itself. Some reflection on the rim. Parts of the teddy bear was lit up in faint yellowish light. The reflection extended to the green pepper as well. Very challenging to model glass object as whatever behind the glass tends to be a bit darker.

Cynthia has already commissioned me to draw some of her other teddy bears. I wanted to title my 4th oil painting as “Three Peppers and a Teddy Bear” but Cynthia suggested “My White Pepper”. “My White Pepper” that is then.

No Eye Candy’s Open Mic Performance Coming Soon?

Left - Wilfrid (me!) and right - Jason

(I know you don’t get to see my picture in my own website often and here you are – the dude on the left is me with the Gibson Les Paul guitar and on the right is my guitarist, Jason the hunk with his Rickenbacker.)

As the self-appointed band leader of No Eye Candy, songwriter and singer behind the band’s music, I must step up and be an inspiration to my band members. If local band Lunarin, which by the way the lead singer and bassist has a full time job as a lawyer practicing where my ex-old-office was, can make it to perform at Esplanade and has albums that are sold in HMV, No Eye Candy must go further than where we are now.

My original intend was for me to go solo doing open-mic performance with my guitar. My band guitarist Jason is gamed for jamming with me on stage and that is just great news. Last weekend, he dropped by my home music studio and we jammed out 4 of the 6 songs that I have memorised. Cynthia can testify with me that with Jason’s guitar track, it adds a new dimension to the song. It will probably take a while before Jason and I can play the songs tight. I am very excited over this. Stay tuned!

My 3rd Contribution to YouTube for Sam & Max Episode 3 – The Mole, The Mob, And The Meatball

Image taken from actual game play

Click onto the video below contributed to YouTube by me and you won’t regret it!

The 3rd monthly installment of this point-and-click adventure game Sam & Max based on two hilarious comic book characters is out and I took no time in completing this episode (for more introduction on this PC game, please visit my previous blogs as linked below). There is one particular cut-scene that is the most hilarious clip I have seen so far. I have made it into a video clip and uploaded it to YouTube for sharing.

Humours aside, this 3rd episode suffers from mid-episode-syndrome. The 1st episode is new to all and the puzzles took a while to solve. For the 2nd episode, most of the tricks are already made known by 1st episode and the main entertainment value comes from the extra contents generated from various reality TV studios that Sam and Max have to go through. As for the 3rd episode, it is the shortest installment so far and lots of contents are recycled from the 1st episode. Most of the puzzles are straightforward and intuitive, which is not necessary a bad thing because I found myself sat back and chuckled through the scenes. Extra effort has been put into the scripting and it shows. It took me about 3 hours to complete the entire episode and I am looking forward to what the last 2 episodes will look like.

Katharine McPhee’s New Album Is Not To Be Missed

There are times in life you act against your head and in this case, I am glad that I did just that.

Friends of mine know that I am a huge fan of American Idol’s runner-up Katherine McPhee. I took leave on that day to watch the final live ready for a celebration when my dream was crushed by you-know-who. But that was then. As I was about to sample McPhee’s debut album, I really did not know what to expect. Honestly speaking, I would have given this album a pass after the first 2 songs if she was someone else.

The album has a wide collection of upbeat R&B and slow ballads and is easily one of my most listened to album of 2007 so far. Her slow ballads remind me of Christina Aguilera and Mariah Carey such as “Home” (track 4), “Ordinary World” (track 8), “Better Off Alone” (track 10), “Neglected” (track 11), and “Everywhere I Go” (track 12). Her upbeat numbers remind me of Beyoncé. Most notable tracks are “Open Toes” (track 3 – the fun kicks in at 2.30 mins when the beat changes), “Not Ur Girl” (track 5), “Dangerous” (track 7), and “Do What You Do” (track 9).

Katherine McPhee has a warm and gifted voice and does not sound overpowering. The music arrangement of the songs are addictive to listen to. Overall, this album is pleasant to the ears. If you have time constraint, sample “Open Toes”, “Home”, and “Not Ur Girl” from Amazon.com. They are my favourites. By the way, did you know that Katherine is only 23 this year? I thought her voice and outlook looks more mature than that.
