Ripping DVD Tracks For Your iPod, MP3 Player, And Wireless Phone

Playing Ayumi Hamasaki’s video on my new N95 8GB

Am I the only one who is obsessed with importing my favorite music video clips into a portable device while keeping each track separate? I have been asking my circles of friends, from techno-geeks to don’t-ask-me-I-am-just-a-user, but no one can give me a satisfactory answer. So I have decided to try to find an answer myself, an answer that is safe and free-of-charge. Click here for a dedicated article on how I do it.

Now, with more and more portable devices that are capable to play video clips in an acceptable size and quality, watching your favorite video clips on the go is indeed a God sent reality. Imagine, you are squeezed into a train and your destination is just a few stops away. You don’t have your book or magazine with you and you are bored staring at a train full of bored people. Listening to music is just not good enough. What shall you do? Yes, take out your iPod, or MP3 Player, or wireless phone and watch your favorite video clips. Your boyfriend or girlfriend is late again and you have absolutely nothing better to do, what shall you do? That’s right, take out your portable device, watch a clip or two of your favorite homemade video, and be reminded why you still love that person despite the fact that he or she is yet again late. Or when you are stuck in a jam at CTE, cars are not moving and you car is on handbrake, what shall you do?

Okay, probably not for the last scenario but you get the drift.

I am surprised that none of the mainstream software application allows ripping of DVD tracks into a portable format with a click of a button. We can rip audio track into MP3 format. Why can’t we do the same for the DVD that comes with the CD that I own? There are software applications out there that may do the job with just a click. Most of them are on trial version and not free-of-charge. I also have had bad experience installing and un-installing these third party software (even for that famous video converter for iPod) ended up with system corruption here and there. Finally, not many out there have the feature of allowing you to rip your DVD track-by-track much like the audio CD. Usually the end result is one huge video file that takes up too much space in your precious portable device.

So, are you ready to read more?

Disclaimer: My criteria may be different from yours.  If you are happy with installing trial or full versions of third party software, please continue to do so. I also prefer the total flexibility of extracting any part of the video that I want.

Snippet Of My Life Episode 9 – Questions, Questions

Oil Painting Morphed

One day, a girl in front of me flip-opened her phone. Wallpaper was a picture of two girls. Two good friends perhaps. I thought it was beautiful. I wonder what if you see a guy in front has a wallpaper of two guys instead. Or three, with heads close to one another. Something wrong … with that picture?

One day, I was practicing my music, like I have done since primary school. I was suddenly inspired to classify daily non-work related, personal activities into two types. Give (type I) and take (type II). Type I activities are like cooking. Singing. Playing instruments. Writing diary. Writing stories. Blogging. Painting. Making models. Jogging. You take something from within you and give it to the environment outside of you. Type II activities are like watching TV. Reading. Surfing the net. Playing computer games. Listening to radio. This time, you take in things passively from the outside.

So, which type of activity do you usually do? In your free time?

And I think type I activities are in general therapeutic, euphoric from within. I enjoy type I activities and I think that type II is a waste of time.

Then I change my mind. Perhaps some people enjoy taking, more so than giving. One day, I was on the plane. Besides me was this super hyper kid, totally lack of manner. No “thank you” nor “please” when talking to the SIA air-hostess. What has our future become? He looked like a rich kid. His whole family looked rich.

Or maybe just because I am from the service industry, all my life, I think that was rude. Maybe his daddy thinks it’s okay. Hence, it is just a change of perspective? That explains what goes round in the world, why people behave differently? People from the front line are trained to put on a happy face all the time when facing clients doesn’t mean that everyone has to comply? Who set the rules anyway.

Year 2008. Will Israel progress towards withdrawing the troops from the Palestine settlement while Palestine will dismantle the terrorism within? Will Taiwan progress towards unifying with China now that the opposition has gained more seats than the ruling party? Will North Korea progress towards unifying with the South Korea now that the leaders are to meet the third time? High hope for the year 2008?

In Bush’s visit to Middle East, he preached about democracy. What would a king from the Middle East preach about if he does visit the West? Is democracy really the way to go?  Or it is just like the perspective on the happy faces, the giving and taking type of daily personal activities.

Year 2008. Doesn’t look pretty so far. “Subprime” is the word of the year for 2007. I wonder what will it be for year 2008.

So, what’s wrong with all these pictures.  Maybe nothing is wrong.  Maybe everything is wrong.

A New Theme For Year 2008

One mountain at Lantau Island, Hong Kong

I am still learning this process of self-reflecting of the past and goal setting for the new year. Here, I am going to share with you what seems to work over the years, what doesn’t, and what my plan for 2008 is going to be. Let me tell you upfront what does not work: not planning for the new year at all. To borrow a Chinese idiom “一年之計在於春,一日之計在於晨” (loosely translates to “a year’s plan lies in spring [i.e. the beginning of the year], a day’s plan lies in the morning”), now is a good time to plan ahead. For those years that I did not plan, I have no recollection of what I have achieved.

I remember when I was in my twenties, I used to have this one-worded theme for each year. Such a theme is easy to remember, relevant, and if chosen right, it seems to stick into my mind throughout the year, in everything I do. Let me give you an example. One year, I reflected upon my 16 to 20 working hours a day, 7 days a year and I said to myself: enough is enough. I could earn all those overtime paid and achieve all the career progression I wanted but I was missing all that life has to offer. So, I picked a theme “Balance”. Mind you, it was not easy to seek a work life balance back then. When I did come home while the sun was still up, I became uneasy not knowing what to do or where to do. I ended up having the feeling that I have wasted an evening not working. Miraculously, with that theme “Balance”, I seemed to have every single and small decision made based upon that word “Balance”. It worked way too well. I rejected overtime requests or did all that I could to prevent myself and my team going down that path of long hours and no life. It went so well that it me took a couple of years to find the balance. These days, I work and do my best to make sure that the people in my network work the most effective way during the office hours and in most cases, we all go home on time. Picking the right theme can be powerful. And this can work for you too!

Last year was interesting not just because I only worked for the later half of the year, I did my planning in a scorecard style. As you may notice, I stop posting the monthly result after the first three months. You may wish to know that I did track my progress till the middle of the year but I found it quite boring to publish the results in my site every beginning of the month. I thought I did pretty badly over the year on this rather ambitious scorecard but it is not quite the case. OK, I think I only achieve a 40% which to be fair, under my “wonderful” color coding system, it is a yellow that means “a mix of ups and downs”. And it is because of this scorecard, I did climb the Mount Kinabalu and started my oil painting hobby that count as two extraordinary projects. Also, I did take the initiative to plan the visit to Melbourne, my surprise visit to Jakarta, and my visit to Hong Kong/Macau. By now, I think I have hit the travel budget target over and above. I seriously have cut down my computer gaming hours a lot (my big, big problem in year 2005/6). The target set somehow worked as the “Balance” theme to me. I have this cautious warning in my head of not hitting the said target every time I played. Lastly, hitting the career fulfillment index is a bit of a luck factor. But then again, I did put effort in finding what I want.  Based on just these four tiny achievements, I can say 2007 has been fruitful to me.

So, what’s my plan for year 2008? I want to go back to my theme driven way of life. After much consideration with candidates such as “Take Risk, Be Bold” or “Be Bold, Take Risk” (both are different by the way) or others, I have decided on …

“Do It”.

Yes, parking ideas of things that I want to do at the back my my head or at the bottom of my to-do list is not good. I need to … “do it”. If I need to be bold, so be it. If I need to take calculated risk, so be it too. The most important thing is, I have to action on what I have set to do, or rather what my heart has set to do. I shall count the number of achievements – however small or big – over the year as an indication of success. Hopefully, this theme will do wonders to me, the same way as “Balance” did to me years ago.

As for the personal scorecard way of life, I am not ready to ditch it completely as yet. Over this few days I am going to revisit the measurements and targets and to rethink how it can be aligned to my new theme. I have learned that this way of monitoring progress has two main challenges: the constant stress to meet target and the day-to-day chore of taking down the actual measurements. I have to find ways to make this monitoring progress a fun process (perhaps tie the increment progress to small rewards) and I have to find ways to record the measurements in the most convenient way (such as a calendar by the rice cooker to tick off days that I have home cooked meals). Scorecard way of life, I believe, is still a good way to discipline my rather undisciplined life. Stay tuned.

So, what are your thoughts? Do you think this is going to work for me? And what is your plan going ahead?

Fragments Of My Dreams Episode 7 – Doctor, Actor, Law Enforcer

my_shadow.jpg

Part 1 – Doctor

In this war torn city of my homeland, I was leading a rescue team to search for someone dear to my heart. The order, the transport system, the city’s prosperity, all dissolve because of this God forsaken war. The roads are hardly recognizable, with buildings and structures all crumble into blocks of concrete piling up onto one another in the most random manner that perhaps in peace time, people may admire that arrangement in an artistic way – even if this pile of meaningless structure is titled as depressing as “My Once Called Home”.

I tried to fasten the pace of my rescue team but in this cold winter, there is only that much the team can push forward.

Then I find him. We find him lying listlessly on the ground. Frost formed on his lips. Such look of peacefulness and serenity. I knee down beside him trying to hear his breathing, or feel his pulse, or look for any sign of vitality – and I find none.

What is the use of doctors when we cannot resurrect?

Part 2 – Actors

In this war torn city of my homeland, people still need entertainment to have a reason to live on, to have something to take their minds off this God forsaken war.

I am not the main actor, just a bystander in the set that probably none will notice. I doubt if anyone knows how to act. That does not matter. The entertainment industry is run by gangsters. In fact, everything here is run by gangsters. I only learned of the movie’s plot days ago. The plot is pornographic. This war is pornographic.

Today, I am shocked to see three young actresses – acquaintances of mine – arrive at the set. The costume is majestically colorful and these actresses are happily trying out the costume. Do they know what they are getting into? Do I know what I am getting myself into?

I have decided to pull one of them aside during break and by the bench, I tell her the true plot. She is in tears and I have got to run, fast, before the gangsters get to me.  And I hope these actresses get away from the set as fast as I do.

Part 3 – Law Enforcer

In this war torn city of my homeland, order must be restored. We must choose side. Do I want to be amongst the gangsters who act on self-interest, occupy homes of others as pleased, take away the belongings of other as pleased, and bed the daughters and wives of others as pleased? Or do I want to be a law enforcer instead?

I choose to wear the uniform. On day one, I was with the squad of law enforcers, armed with old riffles and we shot at the marching mob. None of our riffles seemed to work. None of us seemed to be able to aim either.

On day two, there was no formation, pure street fight. Uniform and the non-uniform ones ran madly in the street shooting anything that moved. As days go by, we are vastly outnumbered. I fear wearing this uniform of mine. I fear even taking the public transport in the city.

Tonight, I am with the crowd, by the bench, almost run out bullets. As we observe the war that goes on in front of our eyes, one boy dressed in black turns to face me and asks why I do not shoot him. I reply that I only shoot people out there, at the war zone, who pose as threats to the law. I think, these kids can be my new friends. For all I know, this war could end right here right now.

Two gangsters emerge from the dark wearing white casting in one of the arms possibly due to war injury. Together, they drag me into a dark alley nearby. I scream for help and hope that my new friends would intervene.

But in war, there is no such thing as hope.

Part 4 – A conclusion written beyond my dreams

In this dark alley, I lie motionlessly on the ground hoping that the rescue team will arrive on time. Damn this God forsaken war. Damn this war torn city of my homeland.

PS 1 – Picture taken at Lantau Island, today.
PS 2 – I dreamed these dreams the night before watching “Atonement”. In case you wonder there may exist some casual connections had it be the other way round.

This Is How Love Is Measured

Everything in life can be measured, that is what I believe – either directly, via proxy measurement, or indirectly. One friend of mine asked: how do we measure love?

We don’t have something like a love-meter, nor any consistent correlation that can scientifically measure love. How love is measured (after months and years of pondering), I think, is simply how much time you spend thinking of that someone or something positively during the day. Time is finite and it is a good unit of measure because everybody has the same number of hours a day. If you are thinking of that LV bag the entire day, yes, you are in love with that LV bag. If you are craving for sushi the entire day, yes, you would love to have sushi for dinner. If you think of work even after office hours, in as much as you hate to admit, you love your work more than your own family, or your cat, or your dog.

It is kind of simplistically elegant. If you are unsure whether you love A or B more, ask yourself one question: do you think of A or B more often? No more dilemma, no more so called follow your heart. If you love someone, you think of that someone often.

Not too surprisingly, if you hate that something or someone, you also think of that person or that thing often. Love and hate belongs to the same category – intense feeling towards something or someone (the opposite of love is indifference).

So, what does falling out of love mean? Perhaps that is when you think lesser of that someone each passing day. Perhaps having the pictures of your family at your workplace does make sense. You see, you think, therefore you love. Perhaps having a picture of your dog as your wallpaper does reinforce how much you love your little companion.

So, do you love me more than I love you? Tell me how often you think of me and I may tell you what you want to know.

Love can be measured, I believe.

Snippet Of My Life Episode 8 – A Story

At night, I drive. Clueless about direction. Clueless about my destination. A listless body. Heavy in breathing. Clueless about where I am heading. Clueless about what I am doing. I drive, at night.

Porcelain, unblemished whiteness. Below which a story less common. And to life, we toast. And this moment, we live. Above which a being least ordinary. Fragile darkness, pain.

The spirit is high. In red and white. Under the starry night. We smile and weep. We stumble and humbled. Until the darkness falls. In black and grey. The road is wide.

I hardly know you. At night, I drive. Familiar places. Unfamiliar road signs. Sometimes, I wish. An angel comes by.

Snippet Of My Life Episode 7 – Numbers

Sometimes I wonder, how many pairs of non-work related user id and password we have to memorize these days? I actually have to keep a record on paper and there are close to 45 pairs. In the order of importance, they are: [1] Essential accounts (14%) like the SingPass, [2] Web mail accounts (7%), [3] Gaming accounts (7%) – oh yes, online gaming ranks high in my life, [4] Shopping accounts (12%) like Amazon.com, [5] Utility accounts (17%) like the anti-virus site that asks for my account info oh so often, [6] Social accounts (38%) like YouTube, my favorite forums etc etc, [7] Misc accounts (5%) like those require you to create an account in order to submit a job application.

Seriously, Microsoft may be the evil one. But imagine the world with just one user id and password … the Microsoft Passport. (And no, my passwords are not all the same.)

For days, I have been wondering why the sign at the car park entrance says: season or hourly parking only. What else can that be? One day I turned to Cynthia as the car entered the car park for an answer. Within seconds, she answered: loading unloading? D’oh! At times I think my brain is hardwired in a certain way.

Talking about hard-wiring, since young I was taught how to subtract numbers in a certain way. For instance, to subtract 300 from 128, I would start from the right and work myself to the left. When I top up my cash card, I always round it up. An obsessive behavior of mine. I would stand in front of the ATM trying to work out what to key in for, say, S$78.53 left in my card. I would work from right to left (7, 4, 1, 2, 2) and then have a hard time reversing the order of the answer (S$221.47).

Then one day, I have decided to work from left to right. It works wonder and it is really not that hard. Now I can even work out how to top up 1,395,296,105.49 to 3 trillion without thinking (answer: 1,604,703,894.51). I wonder why I was not taught that way at school.

And one day, I turned to Cynthia and shared with her my “great discovery”. Her response was: all along that was the way I subtract!

Stupid I felt and in British English, the word “ass” means either a stupid person (informal) or a donkey (old use). I wonder if the words “dumb ass” was inspired by a donkey at all.

Our 7th Anniversary For Better And For Worse

Melbourne Trip ... A National Park

How many 7 years do we have? Perhaps 10? The 1st 7-year we spend almost oblivious of what life is about. The 2nd 7-year we figure out what education means. The 3rd 7-year we study hard to get to the University we want and we fall in and out of a series of love relationships only to realize that we have drank too much and time has passed too fast. And finally for me, the 4th 7-year, I have been with that someone whom I have spent my life with till … my hair turns a bit too grey and my memory turns a bit too blurry.

But that is the beauty of it all. People fight a little from time to time and make peace with one another; people quarrel from time to time only to realize that we simply don’t mean the things we say; and people make mistakes from time to time only to realize that forgiveness is the greatest gift we can give to another person. And through this journey I learn, she learn, and we learn. We learn that love is patience because the most precious asset we have is time; we learn that love is sacrifice because it is when we put another person above oneself do we realize that there could be something worth dying for; and we learn that love is unconditional because when one surrenders it all, one can make space for what love has to offer.

It is when nuisance turns into something of a novelty; it is when absurd behavior turns into something of a charm; and it is when crazy idea turns into a memorable event that make this segment of a 7-year worth living. And it is the smile that one sees, the warmth of the body one feels, and the scent that one smells that transforms an ordinary moment in life into something worth writing, worth reminiscing, and worth living. But I know the darkness is there because we have closed our eyes at times, the emptiness is there because we forgot what we rightfully have, and the sadness is there because our hearts fond of the notion of having someone with us every single moment and living breath of our lives.

And in this 5th 7-year I can tell myself in front of the mirror that it is life well spent. Life is a finite business I know. And I may have another 5 more to go. Today is our 7th anniversary and for better and for worse, I pray that I will live one extra day more than the one I love – no more, no less.

Snippet Of My Life Episode 6 – Where Does Money Come From?

From young, my parents taught me that we work hard for food – like the farmers, like the fishermen. To be successful in life, we work hard. If I had my own child, I would probably have redefined what success means. I would have preached that hard work only earns you (in most cases) a decent living. To be successful, the first thing to do is to forget about working hard. Only then you have time to think and to act out of the norm. I wish I have studied economy instead.

I may not know much about economy. But I have experienced diminishing marginal returns today. Lunch. One colleague of mine wanted to take a train to Bugis Junction for a change. Another one wanted a burger meal. We headed to Bugis and I felt for my “burger-loving” colleague. So after I had a full chicken rice set, I turned to him and asked …

“Burger?”

His eyes lit up. The group of four headed to McDonald’s. My “burger-loving” colleague and I each ordered a chicken burger. We finished. I asked …

“Burger?”

His eyes lit up. And both of us headed to the counter and ordered another S$2 burger. We finished. I kept quiet. Another colleague of ours said …

“Let’s have one round of burger for the four of us!”

By the time I had my 3rd burger, I have experienced diminishing marginal returns.

After lunch, I could not focus. My blood has gone to somewhere but my brain. Our intern stepped in and announced that our bank has offered him a job starting next August.

“Congratulations!” I screamed in excitement.

Then I learned that the starting pay for a fresh local graduate for the graduate program is close to …

S$4k a month

FOUR THOUSANDS DOLLARS?! Then another colleague of mine told me that according to the newspaper, one fresh graduate joins an investment bank for S$12k. Couples of years back, some graduates couldn’t even find a job. It’s all about timing.

Ignorance is bliss. Too bad you are reading this blog entry.

I know our Singapore’s Straits Time Index (STI) is hitting 4000 soon. But seriously, where does all the money come from? One friend of mine with a working capital of S$300-400k has generated S$100k profit from the stock market in 1 year. As a hobby. And he has a full time job.

Not everyone benefits from the stock market nor the very company we join that has the double-digit growth has something to do with our pay increment. My next topic? The landlords.

My favorite news-stand at Far East Square was used to give me a discount of 50 cents for magazines less than S$10 and 1 dollar otherwise. Always. These days I seldom see the two staff who used to sit outside, whom I mingled often. This evening, the boss was outside. I was sure that he wouldn’t give me a discount.

And he didn’t.

But we had a great chat. His landlord is increasing the rent from S$6k to S$9k by April next year. That is a 50% increase in rental. Can he pass that to the consumers? Probably not. No one is going to pay a CLEO magazine for S$6.60 instead of S$4.40. He has already got rid of one of his staff (S$1k salary) and gave his another staff a S$200 rise to cover the extra work. But he is going to close down his shop because of high rental. Sad. As I do love his magazine collection. He is not seeking other places because the rental is as bad. The shop next door of his has already changed hand four times. For a S$9k rental. The previous owners each lost 6 months of deposit.

Economy going strong but yet, shops like my favorite news-stand has to retrench staff and close down. Huh?

Hard work does not pay off but I do respect those who work hard. Like one cashier at Cold Storage. I asked if she has her dinner and she told me that she lives in JB (Malaysia). By the time she reaches home, it is 11 at night. 2 hours it takes for her to travel to home. Then she will eat and start another day, early.

I still don’t know where money comes from. But I am certain that you can’t get rich by merely working hard.

Large Group Activity With Straws And Masking Tape … And A Twist

My friends from my last job, I am sure, can readily relate to what I am going to write here. Head to part 2 if you wish. For the benefit of the rest of the avid readers, let me elaborate just a little bit. In the past, some of our projects involved having a full day workshop with a large group of clients (anywhere from 20 to 80). You see, giving lecture on strategy can be boring to the participants, even if it is half an hour per topic. Having break-out sessions brainstorming on how to articulate and measure strategy can be both tiring and dry. So what we consultants did was to make their days fun and memorable. The intangible value as you may say. These are the people who have stepped out of their daily operation and have a chance to finally socialize. To us, we have a piece of deliverable to complete and we need to tap onto their brains. To them, they just want to have a good time and finally get to chat with the girl in the next cubicle near to them or near the other door far far away.

It is not until I have made a switch out of my last career do I realize what it is like viewing from the other side. Recently I have attended a team building event organized by an external party hosted at Sentosa. I must say, the event triggered a walk down the memory lane and some of the ideas that this organizer has is refreshing.

PART ONE – SELLING THE FUN FACTOR

There are many ways to get work done. Nothing beats the fun way. In the past, I was used to have a group of capable and creative consultants who took part in spicing up the events. If I am going to sell you a piece of work that involves X number of people Y number of hours in a duration of Z number of weeks and you will have this wonderful piece of deliverable that propels your organization to a higher level, you may bite onto it, you may not. If I am going to sell you a series of events and working sessions that not only will you have the same piece of deliverable, but also your team (apparently large) will have a chance to bond with one another, new ideas will be harvested from the ground (read: buy in … further read: change management) … and you can even throw in a BBQ session in the end of the day so as to boost morale. Now, that sales pitch flies, I am telling you.

To make the day fun, it is not that hard. First, split the boring stuffs (read: real work) into pieces. Make sure they are well spaced out with a 10.30am tea break (cannot be too close to breakfast nor lunch) and a 4pm tea break. If the group is new, throw in an “Icebreaker” activity. At appropriate timing, throw in an “Energizer” activity to break the monotonous of the facilitated session. Or just to re-focus the audience back onto the day’s activities. Did you know that when you gather a group of people after the lunch hours, their minds are still somewhere out there? An “Energizer” activity helps them to forget what occupies their minds and to bring them back to Planet Earth.

My team has lots of creative ideas. We seldom recycled the same activity too many times. And we always found ways to add a twist to the old games. There are many ways to carry out “Icebreaker” activity. The key is to let people get to know one another better. One of my favorites is to ask each person to draw a symbol that represent themselves on a piece of paper and within each group, go round the circle and present what this symbol means to them. In turn, we consultants got to pick people in random to present their pictures on stage. It is really not that tough to find some funny ones. Usually you can judge the reaction from the audience to see which one to pick. And don’t forget to pick up the ones from the bosses. People usually have a good laugh out of it. Of course, you can ask everyone to stick their pictures onto the walls so that people get to see what others are like during breaks.

“Energizer” usually ties back to the theme of the topic the consultants want to talk about next. Some can be as simple as a quiz with simple scoring system. Some can be as straightforward as a puzzle solving competition amongst teams. Perhaps I am an engineer in training, I love the ones that involve people building things.

Straws and masking tape are wonderful materials when it comes to building activities. Off the head, we used to have “build a bridge” or “build a tower”. The specifications are flashed out via the projectors and each team is given 20 mins or half an hour to complete the task.

PART TWO – MORE STRAWS AND MASKING TAPE

What a role reversal. Now I get to play the games that the external organizers put together! Hooray! I was excited because for the past two years or so, I only got to see people play the “Energizer” games, scratching my head and the heads of my team to think of the next better and more fulfilling game.

For one of the indoor games that we played in Sentosa, the objective was simple: build a track to keep a ping pong ball in motion. Whichever team that clocks in the longest time wins. Each team was given 1 hour to complete the task.

1 hour?! Isn’t it a bit … too long.

I was amazed at how time flew.

The twist I was talking about is not keeping a ping pong ball in motion for the longest time (though I must say it is refreshing on its own). 15 minutes into the activity, we were instructed to send 2 of our members into another team for 5 minutes and in return, we received 2 new members from a different team (hence, not a swap of team members between two teams but rather a rotation of team members). It was interesting because suddenly there was new idea injecting into the our team and those who got send away would bring back new idea from a totally different team.

30 minutes into the activity, we were asked to abandon our own track and to take over our next team’s work. That was actually quite interesting. Some of our initial reaction was … to sabotage another team’s work. But that quickly dissolved I am sure. Others worked on the half baked track in fear that we have to take over the work from then on. Of course, some of us genuinely wanted to help.

I still remember how much shock we had when we looked at the track that hardly worked. One side of the support was collapsing and we were at lost as in what to do next. I started working on the support and some others started working on the track. And within 10 minutes, we actually got a working prototype! We loved it so much that we did not want to move back to our old track – but we did have to, as announced by the organizer.

You would have thought that we all more or less built the same thing right? Well, while we all have the concept of oscillation in order to keep the ball in motion for as long as possible (according to the organizer, not many actually thought of that) and we all finished on time (our department is responsible in delivering projects … duh … job hazard), our designs varied. My team has come up with a very neat and simple design rested on table with moderate height. One team has the height of twice of ours rested on the floor. Another team went for the length. One created a very long track (about 4 meters) with a few humps. Another one made a small circular track that spiralled towards the center. I noticed that those teams that built the structure on the floor, the structure itself tended to be a lot bigger.

Another interesting piece of fact is that the result did not vary much despite such a variation in design. The timing was in the region of 40 seconds for all of us. I wonder if I can create a mathematical model based on that one day. It is a pretty fun game. Give it a try when you have a large group next time.
