A Very Long Engagement – A Show Worth Watching

Yet another film played by the famous French actress Audrey Tautou. I have heard mixed reviews on this very long show (134 minutes). Although reviewers from Singapore’s newspaper gave this show a 4-star, who take their opinions seriously anyway?

A show about a girl, Mathilde, who went into great length in investigating her fiance Manech’s whereabouts. Manech has gone missing during a World War I episode. In doing so, she has uncovered the stories of couple of others that intertwined with Manech’s. Is this a romantic show? I guess it is more than a mystery genre to me. Did I enjoy it? Personally, very much so. And by the way, Jodie Foster was playing in the show speaking French. Came as a surprise to me.

The Wait Is Over – World Of Warcraft

Yes! I have finally gotten hold a copy of World of Warcraft (WoW). Despite the stability issues that many players – including myself – are facing, it is still a great game. Keep a watch out at the main menu on the left. And yes, the image on the left is my very first character of the game – a level 5 Night Elf Warrior.

Tears of Joy and Tears of Desperation

When I first held onto my two copies of World of Warcraft (WoW), I was nearly in tears. Tears of Joy of course. My gaming buddy and I have been waiting for this game for months, if not years. And finally, through another friend of mine who brings in games from US, he put me onto the priority list. And here I was, yesterday, when I was holding onto the WoW, the prettiest thing yet the most expensive game that I have purchased so far.

As soon as got the copies of WoW, I met my gaming buddy up, passed him a copy, had dinner together, and rushed home for the installation.

And that was when the tears of desperation started to fall. I have tried the whole night and couldn’t get the game installed. 4 CDs I have and I seldom able to go pass the 2nd CD. No matter what I tried and still did not work. I fell asleep in between the reinstallation of my applications and the installation of the game and all yielded the same result.

What scared me the most was when I visited the technical support forum, I was not alone. There were a lot of desperate souls out there. I called up the support line in US and the office was closed. That was when I fell asleep again.

Nightmare must have woken me up in the middle of the night, I returned to my computer and tried again. Still cannot. Tried calling the support line and it was busy. Good sign, it was. The line must be open. I must have tried calling for half an hour and after 15 mins of waiting, the first sign of miracle arrived. Someone answered my call!

Following his instruction, I restored my computer and tried again. Instead of waiting to see the error page again, I said to myself – this is the best time to go to sleep with hope in mind. So sleep I did.

Another nightmare must have woken me up in the moring. It was so real that as though I have walked to the computer and saw the same error message again. It was so surreal that during the first visual impact, I did realised that it was a dream and I walked out to the living room in yet another dream to see the same error message again.

Finally woken, I walked to the computer. This time round, it said the installation was successful.

Looking back, my faith in God must have jumped ten-fold in the past 12 hours.

How Some Organisations Should Learn From Online Games

How we may wish some of our bosses play online games more often. At times some organisations drive people nuts. I wish I could apply what I learnt from DAoC (Dark Age of Camelot) to my working life.

  • Team up at the right level
  • Skill set is important
  • Never pull a resource out during the project
  • There is so much endurance one has
  • If people are not having fun, they will leave the team
  • Leadership is everything

Team Up at the Right Level

I learnt much from DAoC that teaming up at the right level is important. For instance, if I am a level 30 fighter, there is no point in grouping with a level 5 healer. Chances are, I will be dead long before my healer can heal me. And guess what? Very soon, my healer will be dead too. Teaming up a very junior consultant with a senior consultant is not effective. Definitely need something in between.

Skill Set is Important

Very often, my organisation assigns resource based on availability rather than skill set. That is really bad. If you play DAoC, you know that having the right skill is very important. Teaming up with people of the right skill set is crucial to group success. People should complement each other. If majority of my group are fighter class, time to recruit healers such as clerics.

Never Pull a Resource Out During the Project

During a fight in DAoC, each group member focus on bring down the monsters. No one leave the group during a fight. It is just counter-productive. Sigh … wish my bosses realise that. By pulling out resources during a project is like having team members leaving the group during a fight. It is a doomed move.

There is So Much Endurance One Has

You just can’t slave drive people. Each of us has limit. In DAoC, each character has a certain amount of endurance. When the endurance runs out in the middle of a fight, you know that is when trouble begins.

If People are not Having Fun, They will Leave the Team

This is obvious. People join a group and fight together. But if they are not having fun, they will just leave the group and find another group. Work-wise, it is the same. Do you really expect people to stick around if they are not having fun? No way! Be creative and add the fun to working life.

Leadership is Everything

I lead group in DAoC and I am led by others. Leadership is important. One trivial mistake can lead to the doom of the entire group. I look into the eyes of my group and I feel a sense of responsibility. If you are not fit to be a leader, step aside. Make someone else a leader. At least that is what we do in DAoC.

I’m Going To Be So Miss Dark Age Of Camelot (DAoC)

I can’t remember when I have started playing Dark Age of Camelot (DAoC) – one of the online games – but I felt as though it has been a while. Did I start right after my mother and sister left Singapore in mid January? I can’t remember no more.

Tomorrow hopefully I shall receive my copy of World of Warcraft (WoW). That will end my journey with DAoC. It is kind of sad because I have built my friend list there and I have built a character that is more than half way to the highest level. It reminds me of my university days when I have to leave the mudding game because I was no long having a valid user account.

It has been hard to leave DAoC for certain. ML has been more than a good mentor to me. He is going to retain his account in DAoC and we shall move onto WoW. Let’s hope that WoW is as good, if not better, than DAoC.

And I shall open up a new category under My ThoughtI just for WoW. Stay tuned.

Kids Are Annoying Creatures

We know what nature’s beauties are. The sound of gentle breeze, the morning chirping of the birds, the sound of the ocean, the sound of the trees under slow wind, and etc. We prefer to see a blossoming flower to a dying one, a healthy penguin to one that suffers from oil spill, a clear blue sky to a polluted one, etc. In short, we human beings do know what nature’s beauties are.

What happens when some of us develop crooked teeth? There comes the invention of brace. What happens when some of us develop shortsightedness? There comes the invention of spectacles. What happens when some of us develop depression? There comes the invention of Prozac. When happens when some of us develop erectile dysfunction? There comes the invention of Viagra.

Look around you the next time you visit the park or watch the animal channels on cable, observe the baby animals, aren’t they all look pleasant to be with? I don’t mind to be that Papa Tiger when I have Baby Tigers like that.

These are the thoughts that zigzaged my mind when I was greatly disturbed by the kids playing at the corridor. Seems to me that they have been playing at that corridor same time everyday. High frequency screaming, running around, banging doors, dropping items onto the floor, and etc. We all know what nature’s beauties are and I fail to see that as one.

We have got brace to cure crooked teeth, spectacles to cure shortsightedness, Prozac to cure depression, Viagra to cure erectile dysfunction. It is about time to find a cure to the hypertension of a kid. Look at the creatures around us, our kids are just not one of them. Something must have gone wrong with the evolution process.

Admit it, these annoying kids are not nature’s beauties. Time to fix it.

Constantine – A Refreshing Movie

Another Matrix film it may be not – though I was hoping so – the fresh ideas that evolve from such a commonly known concept of good versus evil never failed to surprise me. Be it as the chemistry between Keanu Reeves and Rachael Weisz, be it as the little humours that keep popping from such a dark film, be it as some of the scenes that reminds me of the computer game DOOM 3, it is the entire package that makes me go wow.

And don’t forget to stay till the very end of the show – i.e. credits and all – there is a little something that will be worth waiting for. Enjoy the show y’all and I surely look forward to a sequel.

Why I Don’t Upgrade My Car

Photo taken on June 5th, 2004 at Malacca with my car, my wife, and a dog that doesn't belong to us.

Car price has come down quite a fair bit since I bought my car about 4 years ago. New tax structure has brought the car price lower. Many of my friends have already upgraded their cars. Shall I follow suit?

The case for upgrading my car to a new one is simple. I bought my Toyota Corolla at S$91,000 with a OMV valued at S$15,000. If I scrap my car at the end of 10 years, the government will give me back 80% of OMV – i.e. $12,000. Hence, my yearly depreciation is going to be S$7,900.

Since I consider my made in Japan Corolla as the top of its class (the new Corolla is made in Thailand and I won’t consider brands like Mazda, Nissan, Honda, and other European cars of the same class), if I ever change my car, it will be an upgrade from my 1.5 liter car to a 2.0 liter car.

Consider a new Camry, or Accord, or a VK’s Pussat, they are retailing at about S$100,000 and the OMV of the cars are in the region of S$23,000. Under the new tax structure, at the end of the 10th year, the government will refund 50% of ARF and ARF is 110% of OMV. So new car will only get back 55% of OMV – i.e. S$12,650. Yearly depreciation is about S$8,700.

With a mere increase of less than S$1,000 a year, I could have ended up with a much better car. Why not?

The case against it is as such. If I am to trade in my car right now, due to the crash in car price, I will only get back slightly more than S$40,000. That is to say for the last 4 years, my car has depreciated by S$50,000 – i.e. yearly depreciation is S$12,500 instead of S$7,900 as previously calculated!

The bright side is that if I consider the past as write-off (I have to if I consider upgrading one because once I do so, I will realise the loss), the yearly depreciation for the next 6 years for me will be calculated using the current value of my car minus off the goverement refund at the end of the 10 years and that is S$4,600 per year!

And because I have almost paid up all the car loan, my cashflow for car financing for the next 6 years will be S$0.

How about an increase in car related expenses? The road tax for my 1.5L car is S$875. The road tax for a 2L to 2.4L car is S$1,550 to S$2,150. That is an increase of S$1,000 per year on road tax alone.

I travelled about 20,000 km a year. My car’s fuel consumption is 13.32 km per liter. Each year, my car consumes 1500 liter of petrol and if petrol cost is about S$1.5 per liter, I paid roughly S$2,250 on petrol per year.

A 2L+ car’s fuel consumption is estimated to be about 9.5 km per liter at best. Hence, it is a 40% increase in petrol consumption. That translates to about another S$1,000 of extra expense.

At the time of posting, I don’t have the exact figure for an increase in car insurance. My guessimation will be in the region of S$500 to S$1,000.

To sum up, for the next 6 years, I will have to pay an increased of S$4,000 on yearly depreciation and closed to and additional S$3,000 on expenses versus my putting up with my older car and increased maintenance cost, the choice is obvious.

That’s why I am not going to upgrade my car any sooner.

CNY Day 2 – Beauty Sleep + Visit + Movie + Orchard + Fine Dining + DAoC

This is going to be the last blog of this Chinese New Year special and since I have six more photographs to share, let’s make it worthwhile.

It’s been a while since I have slept more than six hours. Weeks, perhaps. No wonder I was so exhausted. My colleague once told me that I looked so tired with eye bags and all. The nine hours of sleep surely did me good.

Thought I would spent New Year on my own but my friend TK called me up for movie. Not only that, he wanted to visit me some more! Lucky I have some oranges in my frig. It is a custom in Singapore that the visitors during Chinese New Year bring along two oranges and the host will then give out two of his oranges in return. Something like passing the gold around.

Next, my friend and I headed off to Orchard to watch Bayside Shakedown 2 – a Japanese movie supposed to be a big hit back in Japan. The scene in Orchard? Full of couples and young girls – don’t they need to do the Chinese tradition and spend time with relatives? Interesting scene – so full of youngsters.

The movie Bayside Shakedown is interesting. I thought it would be some kind of mindless action film that is for the lighthearted. Not so. Although I have to say that when the Japanese police force refer to US Army best practice on the two organization – hierarchy and flat – it sounded more like a terrorist organization structure to me. Rely on the individual intuition and need not to obey order.

My friend an I celebrated New Year at Lawry’s. Spent S$90 each but it was worth it. The steak was so good. It was not the first time I dined at Lawry’s and it won’t be the last. During dinner, I was convinced by my friend to test drive new cars. Bad friend I have.

How then to end this New Year celebration without Dark Age of Camelot (DAoC). This time round the group was fun. I am moving to World of Warcraft (another MMORPG) soon and I am sure I will miss DAoC and all the friends I have made.

Tomorrow my wife will be back and my life will be back to normal. Tomorrow …

What’s Wrong With This Picture? (That’s My PC)

Can someone tell me what is wrong with this picture? The monitor not at the center of the table? The subwoofer should not be at the table top? The PC is facing to the wrong direction?

This morning I woke up with my right leg feeling strained. Definitely due to the fact that my PC was used to protrude out on the right side from my tiny computer table. That limited my leg space big time.

I was so frustrated today that I said to myself – be creative, there must be a better way.

Happy that I did think out of the box. See carefully, not only I have ample leg space, but also no wire or extension cord can be seen. Besides, now the monitor is in perfect alignment with the alphabet portion of the keyboard.
