Japanese Literature: We’ll Prescribe You A Cat by Syou Ishida

Hong Kong is a great place to discover new books. The island has so many bookstores, unlike Singapore. One of the two books I picked up during my holiday was We’ll Prescribe You A Cat. It turned out to be a lighthearted, page-turning read. I thoroughly enjoyed every moment of it. And honestly, I agree — a cat a day keeps the doctor away!

The story begins with a mysterious clinic that’s almost impossible to find, appearing only to those who genuinely seek it because of the emotional pain they’re carrying. The doctor there prescribes a cat to each patient for a fixed period. During the cat’s stay, every patient undergoes a life-changing experience despite their initial scepticism.

It made me reflect on my own life — all the little, unexpected moments that nudge us toward becoming better versions of ourselves. In the book, the cats aren’t what the patients want, but they turn out to be exactly what they need. And that feels very true to how life works.

It’s a heartwarming read, especially for cat lovers or animal lovers in general. The book is a collection of short stories, all tied together by the overarching setting of this peculiar clinic with its out-of-this-world doctor and nurse. Even though the stories are mostly predictable, they’re still very charming and entertaining.

Highly recommended.
