Jacob’s Place

(That’s what I think the restaurant’s name is.)

After I have reached home from work, I have decided to rework on the new song I have written – replacing the entire bridge, shortening the chorus, and added some memorable ending pieces. Just when I was about to record the vocal track, my friend TK sms’ed me for dinner. “No movie?” I sms’ed him back. Turned out that the movie scene is still very pathetic. “So where?” I sms’ed and “Changi Village”, he replied. Contemplating between having a quick bite nearby, get back to recording as well as online gaming – and having a nice dinner with my friend, it was a no brainer decision. Besides, ever since wife not in town, it would be great to have a dinning partner.

Picked TK up and had a chance to showcase my brand new jamming recording (2 days in the making by the way). TK gave me some good comments and he was comparing to the recording I have done with months ago. Man, he has a good memory!

Jacob’s Place is a Western restaurant that serves very affordable food. I have ordered a Steak and Kidney Pie (rare in Singapore). For a price of S$18 (with salad), I would say the pie is so-so. The best is still from UK.

Facing where I sat were quite a number of blackboards. One of them displayed the follows:

Roman 8:28 – We know that in all things God works for good with those who love him, those whom he has called according to his purpose.

And TK was sharing me a touching story of one of his friends who has just passed away due to cancer. His friend has stopped the medication for one and a half years because the doctor told him it is no longer effective. His friend didn’t mention that to anyone and his wife married him knowing that he was fighting against the disease. Love is strong. Staring the passage from Bible, hearing the story made me reflect upon my own life.

Life is indeed very fragile.

Whirlpool of Love and Hate

God knows why, an inspiration hit me yesterday and I care less about messing the whole place up (as wife not in town), wires were everywhere. Worst still I have decided to use my Sequencer to give me an usual drum beat temp of 115 (my songs are usually 72-ish and 148-ish).

It is not at all easy to do 115. To me, it is not that slow and not that fast. Even the strumming pattern is different. “Whirlpool of Love and Hate” is my first song in the year 2006. Spent tonight re-recordiing the song and the demo mp3 was sent to my wife (out-of-town), sister, and brother-in-law for comments. Since I am not ready to upload the song yet (the next round of comments will come from my band after my family ok it), here are the lyrics towards the ending of the song:

This whirlpool of love and hate, these lies that we have made
These wishes of a tainted fate, this life that I was used to live
This whirlpool of love and hate, it is love that I can’t live without
It is hope that I can’t live without, it is you whom I can’t live without

I Love Canon

Received a text message from Canon Service Center that my Canon S1 IS is ready for collection. This digital camera refused to function when I reached Hong Kong – black screen with no picture – and it has passed the warranty period. Despite the heavy rain, I have decided to pay a visit to Keppel Bay Tower near Harbourfront. Texted my friend VY if the tower is anywhere near her workplace and if she was interested in joining me for lunch. Surprise, surprise, she works in the same building.

Thanks to the heavy rain, the service center was empty. No queue! I got my camera back from a very pretty assistance and guess what? The servicing was free! I am once again a satisfied Canon customer. On top of that, I have received a free lens cleaning clothes. Canon really knows how to keep their loyal customers.

Total War Rome

A computer game that was launched more than one year ago and it was sold out in Singapore. So I bought it in Hong Kong.

Today I have finally got the time to try out the game. Boy, the reviewers are right. This game is for the hardcore strategy gamers. Actually I wanted to play this game because recently I was following the HBO series Rome. And I wanted a piece of action. The game turned out to be really tough and it is not at all easy to command legions of Roman.

Fun Jamming Session

Despite the fact that Singapore rained non-stop since last night, our jamming session went on as planned. The rain was heavy and we had some difficulties transporting Lester’s drumset and Jason’s guitar to my home studio.

This was our first jamming session of this year and this was also our first jamming session showcasing our brand new equipments: Cynthia’s new bass (Warwick), Jason’s new guitar (Ricken Backer), and my new guitar (Gibson Les Paul). All our new toys are priced in the region of S$2,000.

Instead of going for quantity (number of songs), we went for quality. Through iteration, we were finding new ways of playing the songs. The funnest moment of the session was when Lester finally got one part of the song right after many attempts (in the middle of the song), he raised his hands in air, and was too excited to continue the song. We all bursted into laughter.

Lester left his drumset in my home and we will have another session this Tuesday (public holiday).

Wallace and Gromit

Kicked start my new year movie journey with TK and watched Wallace and Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit. Probably because I went in with a high expectation (my wife said because we went in with an empty stomach), the show was good but not as good as I thought. The artwork is beautiful. However, the storyline is a bit simplistic and most of the time you are listening to Wallace talking to his dog Gromit that communicates only by facial expression. Also, a number of key incidents of the show is a bit illogical.

Another main reason is that I kept on comparing this movie with Corpse Bride.

A Prison Diary – A Must Read

Verdict: 9/10
Pros: Written in such a compassion that makes you smile and wipe with the author. Wonderful insights in other aspects of life and they are as real as they can be.
Cons: Can’t think of much except that if you are not into memoires kind of writing, you may not enjoy it. Even so, it is worth a try as the book is indeed a page turner. Another reason why this book could be a put off is that it contains more than a million words (as quoted by the author).

I have picked up a signed copy from a bookstore inside Singapore airport and the image shown is the exact signature of Jeffery Archer. It turned out that I have enjoyed this book tremendously. A rare gem I would say.

This entire work is divided into three volumns. The first of all is Belmarsh: Hell. It was written when Archer was first sentenced for four years due to perjury and Belmarsh was where he ended up: jailed together with drug dealers and murderers. Inside Belmarsh as he unveiled the politics inside the prison community, how your life could be made better by mixing with the right people, stories from the lifers, and stories that are so wierd that are even better than novels. Archer also revealed the flaw of the so-called rehabitation system.

When he finally moved to a less restrictive prison (quite a fair bit of interesting plots), that was when he penned the second volume – Wayland: Purgatory. His zest of inquisition never ended. He interviewed the prisoners as well as the prison officers and all gave a deep insight into the prison system as the serious drug problem that UK faced. Not to forget to mention the stories that make you laugh as you read along.

Moving to an open prison prompted him to write the third volume – North Sea Camp – Heaven. By then he was so expert in the prison system and worked hard to gain his enchanced state that provided him with privilages. Here was when he revealed the sad reality that many prisoners who have been model prisoners and been locked up in many years – simply cannot survive in the real world. The so-called stupid things they do just to get them back to jail again because they feel safe inside the four walls.

There is a final twist to this book but I am not going to reveal here. I am really glad that Archer – a politician as well as a writter – continued to write given the circumstances. This book is a must-read.

HK Trip (Day 13) – Chapter 17: Home

I have been sneezing since yesterday. Either it is a cold or allergy. Both are bad for my voice. Hope it’ll go away before weekend.

I will be landing in Singapore in approximately 8 hours and I guess it has been a smashing holiday: Disneyland, Lamma Island, lots of good food in different kinds of restaurants, lots of shopping, spending time with family, and clubbing at Insomnia for the countdown. And yes, after I save this chapter, I will be heading to a final round of Dim Sum. How I love Hong Kong.

Almost every year I do a reflection. I doubt if year 2005 would have been kinder to me had I gone through my resolution. Most likely I won’t bother to do one this year.

HK Trip (Day 12) – Chapter 16: Believe it or Not

I am going to share seven “Believe it or Not” with you (good things come in seven).

Believe it or not, my family bumped onto Alan Tam – a (once) legendary Canto-Pop singer – on our way to dinner this evening. Inside the lift, everyone was holding our breath. He is much older, shorter, and fatter than we thought he is.

Believe it or not, I realised last evening that my credit card limit is busted by seven hundred odd Singapore dollars. I panicked and called my UOB banker at midnight and she told me that I would not be able to use my credit card till I make payment. I answered her that I use GIRO (interbank transfer) and what date would that be. She told me 22nd Jan. I panicked and told her that UOB credit card is the only card I have. She raised my limit temporarily and I ended the overseas call with a “Happy New Year”.

Believe it or not, during the long wait up to the changing room today, I had a wonderful application for 3G phones. How nice if I could call my wife using 3G phones while I change and she could comment how well or not well the clothes fit without me walking out of the changing room. Year 2006 is a year of 3G for sure!

Believe it or not, when I first filled in the declaration form to apply for my new Hong Kong Identity Card, I put Singapore Citzen on the Nationality column. Then the officer paused, turned the form around, and asked me if I have my passport with me. I did not. My mother asked if it was necessary to declare myself as a Singaporean. The officer replied that some people filled in “Hong Kong” and some filled in “Chinese” and she looked away. Now, I am not going to blog what happened then (you will never know how the Singapore govenment scans her citizens’ blogs). I thought it was an interesting experience.

Couple of days ago, I was viewing my father’s self directed, self casted, and self scripted “Tai Chi” DVD and believe it or not, towards the end of the DVD, I could see steam rising up from his head – totally shocking. It must be some kind of real kung foo he was doing.

Believe it or not, I have been hunting for Mai Kuraki’s new Japanese album “Fuse of Love”. My friend told me that it is sold for more than S$70 in Japan and it costed roughly the same in Singapore HMV. Then I resisted buying the CD at a sale price of S$55 and it was sold out in a matter of days. I have been searching for all the HMV’s in Hong Kong and finally found it in one of the local Hong Kong record store – selling at rougly S$50. Some kind of obsessions I have.

After a long hiking at Lamma Island (I will post the photos when I am back to Singapore) and after a last minute of shopping for winter clothes (yes! I can throw away all my old ones that I brought from Singapore), during dinner (after we bumped onto Alan Tam) I have perhaps solved a riddle that my friend JS gave me more than seven years ago. Many times JS asked me to give up but I insisted in solving the riddle myself. What is the riddle? If you are under 18, just skip the rest of this blog.

How can 2 couples (i.e. 2 men and 2 women) having a foursome with just 2 condoms?

I have been that innocent for that long? Sigh. And believe it or not, it took me seven long years to solve that.

HK Trip (Day 11) – Chapter 15: Insomnia (More!)

Woke up late recovered from the new year party that Cynthia and I only managed to get home this morning. The write-up on the Insomnia experience was somewhat short (I promise you three interesting stories if you read on) as after getting rid of the cigarette smell off my body from head to toe, all I wanted was my bed.

Anticipated the big crowd at LKF, we have arrived relatively early. Although this was the second time I tried to make my way to LKF, it was impossible for us to get lost. There were big signs saying: This Way to LKF. Along the way, roads were blocked and policemen and police vehicles were stationed. For those who are new to LFK, there were casualties couple of years ago when a big crowd collapsed on a slopped road during the countdown.

Entered into Insomnia and ordered our drink. There is no entrance fee but the waitresses do not hesitate to make you feel bad and say: if you stand here, you must order a drink! We found our little relatively peaceful standing area away from the cigarette puffers and away from the flow of traffic (people making their ways into the toilets and out). We ended up standing right in front of the stage, which was nice. As we were dancing to the Hip Hop music, I have overheard the following conversations.

A girl’s voice said, “What type of girl do you like?”

That question suddenly pulled me away from my trance state of Hip Hop and I smelt a new story. I turned around and saw this pretty young girl, short hair, trendy, nice feature, and with her was her friend looking way ordinary compared to her. Long hair was all I could remember. The man was fat and he looked Mediterranean. He was soft spoken and I could not make out what he reply was but the pretty one continued, “This is my friend.” But I gathered that the fat one preferred the pretty one to the ordinary one.

The pretty one continued, “Today I am on holiday. I will be at work next week. Call me and we shall meet.”

I could only guess what sort of profession the pretty one was having. Okay, that is story number one.

I swear there were more ladies – beautifully dressed up – than men in Insomnia. On the front row of the stage are the fans and friends and family members of the live bands. I knew it by seeing how the band members greeted them like good old friends. One of the waitresses asked the middle aged lady in front of me to order a drink and when she refused, the waitresses was about to give her a hard time. That was when the middle aged lady pointed to the keyboardist on stage and said something that I could only imagine as: he is my son. Immediately the waitress’s attitude changed and even brought the middle aged lady a glass of warm water. On the far right was a young girl – tall, long hair, unblemished skin, wearing yellow – who throughout the show ogling over the bold, handsome, and tall Southeast Asian bassist. The chemistry between them was overwhelming.

During the break, the bassist was at the back stage and the young girl was signaling to him openly that she wanted his phone number and would call and meet him. The word “signaling” was an understatement. She was aggressively gesturing him that she was all his had him taken up the challenge. Yes, she challenged him. Perhaps it is because of the club policy that he did not take up the “challenge”. Or perhaps, the bassist is dating one of the hot female vocalists? Who knows? Girls these days really go all out to get the ones they want.

That is story number two. We wanted to leave Insomnia at twelve-ish – after the countdown and after the live band’s second session. When we stepped out of Insomnia, we were faced with a huge crowd and decided to go back in and hide for a while. In retrospect, we were faced with an even larger crowd when we left Insomnia at two-ish. There were bouncers controlling the crowd entering the club.

For the third session, there was a new band and there were two vocalists – male and female (I suspect all the in-house bands have such a mix). Both were tall and not particularly good looking (I have this theory that if you don’t look good in an in-house band, you must sing well). When the female vocalist took the stage and sang “My Happy Ending” by Avril Lavigne, her friends at the front row all screamed and pointed at the male vocalist who was standing besides her oblivious to all these gestures. Even the female vocalist made a light gesture (a sad face nodding to her friends) to acknowledge the fact. That song was sung with so much emotion that I felt moved. The lyrics of the song can be found in here. “My Happy Ending” is not a happy love song. It is rather sad about unfulfilled love.
